    Event Recap:  Recession Questions Answered

From newspaper headlines to corporate boardrooms to the halls of politics, questions abound about the recession: How bad will it get? When will the recovery begin? Are there any silver linings?

For answers, we turn to some experts in economic forecasting – the University of Hawaii Economic Research Organization (UHERO), one of our state’s premier sources for market predictions and emerging trends. UHERO’s tools have been used to measure the economic impact on Hawaii of events such as the recession of the 1990s, natural disasters like hurricanes, and 9/11.

Our speaker is Dr. Byron Gangnes, the director of UHERO’s Hawaii Economy Project, which focuses on the essential economic roles of the visitor industry and construction as well as Hawaii’s links with economies in Asia.

In addition, the UHERO website is a treasure trove of practical economic data and research. Dr. Gangnes will demonstrate how to access UHERO’s online resources for use in your own research.

The focus of this luncheon is real life sustainable solutions that make business sense, too.  You’ll learn about current solutions and how they can save money; generate revenue and even create better products while having little or no environmental impact.  Participants will be presented with 5 sustainable steps to implement right now into their organization or family.  Also, ideas for the future will be discussed.

Kevin Loscotoff, Senior Public Affairs Manager, Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. Wal-Mart’s environmental goals are simple and straightforward: To be supplied 100 percent by renewable energy; to create zero waste; and to sell products that sustain our resources and the environment.  Mr. Loscotoff will update us on what Wal-Mart is doing to meet its goals here in Hawaii, nationally and globally.  “Sustainability is more than just a responsibility,” Loscotoff said.  “It’s an opportunity for all of us to bring about real and sustainable change.”

Erwin Hudelist, President, Hagedone Printing Company.  An advocate for the environment long before “sustainability” became a buzz-word, Erwin Hudelist received the Investing in the Environment Award from the State of Hawaii in 1994.  Mr. Hudelist has a Master’s degree in Sustainable Development, a Master’s degree in Print Engineering and the practical experience of running a company for more than 17 years.  Mr. Hudelist will explain how Hagadone has become a nationally recognized leader in environmental responsibility despite the challenges of being a manufacturing business in Hawaii.

    Ethics

Enforcement and Communication of the IABC Code for Professional Communicators

IABC fosters compliance with its Code by engaging in global communication campaigns rather than through negative sanctions. However, in keeping with the sixth article of the IABC Code, members of IABC who are found guilty by an appropriate governmental agency or judicial body of violating laws and public policies governing their professional activities may have their membership terminated by the IABC executive board following procedures set forth in the association’s bylaws.

IABC encourages the widest possible communication about its Code.

The IABC Code of Ethics for Professional Communicators is published in several languages and is freely available to all: Permission is hereby granted to any individual or organization wishing to copy and incorporate all or part of the IABC Code into personal and corporate codes, with the understanding that appropriate credit be given to IABC in any publication of such codes.

The IABC Code is published in the association’s annual directory, The WorldBook of IABC Communicators. The association’s monthly magazine, Communication World, publishes periodic articles dealing with ethical issues. At least one session at the association’s annual conference is devoted to ethics. The international headquarters of IABC, through its professional development activities, encourages and supports efforts by IABC student chapters, professional chapters, and districts/regions to conduct meetings and workshops devoted to the topic of ethics and the IABC Code. New and renewing members of IABC sign the following statement as part of their application: “I have reviewed and understand the IABC Code of Ethics for Professional Communicators.”

As a service to communicators worldwide, inquiries about ethics and questions or comments about the IABC Code may be addressed to members of the IABC Ethics Committee. The IABC Ethics Committee is composed of at least three accredited members of IABC who serve staggered three-year terms. Other IABC members may serve on the committee with the approval of the IABC executive committee. The functions of the Ethics Committee are to assist with professional development activities dealing with ethics and to offer advice and assistance to individual communicators regarding specific ethical situations.

While discretion will be used in handling all inquiries about ethics, absolute confidentiality cannot be guaranteed. Those wishing more information about the IABC Code or specific advice about ethics are encouraged to contact IABC World Headquarters (One Hallidie Plaza, Suite 600, San Francisco, CA 94102 USA; phone, 415-433-3400; fax, 415-362-8762).

International Association of Business Communicators Code of Ethics for Professional Communicators

Preface: Because hundreds of thousands of business communicators worldwide engage in activities that affect the lives of millions of people, and because this power carries with it significant social responsibilities, the International Association of Business Communicators developed the Code of Ethics for Professional Communicators.

The Code is based on three different yet interrelated principles of professional communication that apply throughout the world.

These principles assume that just societies are governed by a profound respect for human rights and the rule of law; that ethics, the criteria for determining what is right and wrong, can be agreed upon by members of an organization; and, that understanding matters of taste requires sensitivity to cultural norms.

    These principles are essential:

    • Professional communication is legal.
    • Professional communication is ethical.
    • Professional communication is in good taste.
Recognizing these principles, members of IABC will: engage in communication that is not only legal but also ethical and sensitive to cultural values and beliefs; engage in truthful, accurate and fair communication that facilitates respect and mutual understanding; and, adhere to the following articles of the IABC Code of Ethics for Professional Communicators.

Because conditions in the world are constantly changing, members of IABC will work to improve their individual competence and to increase the body of knowledge in the field with research and education.

How Mainland Brands Establish Themselves in the Local Market
    January 23, 2008

In the past decade, mainland brands have flocked to Hawaii, bringing greater selection and competitive pricing to local consumers. However, our islands present a unique challenge for out-of-state companies – we are geographically isolated, with a unique local culture and ethnically diverse population. How do mainland brands establish good reputations in Hawaii?

n January 23, find out how a national restaurant has integrated itself into the local landscape and the plans of one of the county’s most recognizable retailers as they open shop in our Islands. Our speakers are:

Eddie Spencer, senior general manager of California Pizza Kitchen (CPK). CPK’s restaurants are favorites for family outings and informal class reunions as well home to many “long time no see” sightings among friends and acquaintances. Sales at several of its branches rank among the highest per square foot in the nation.

Brie Heath, communications manager at Target. An iconic national brand and retailer, Target is scheduled to open its first Hawaii stores in 2009.

    Special benefit:
Everyone who attends will be entered in a random drawing for a 50 percent savings on a one-year IABC membership:

    • One non-member will win half off an IABC membership
    • One current IABC member will receive a 50 percent discount when renewing
