2010 Ilima Awards: Call for Entries!

ARE YOU READY TO BE A WINNER?

The Ilima Awards recognize and award excellence in communication programs. Get the recognition you deserve by submitting your work in this prestigious competition.

Marketing and communication professionals throughout the state of Hawaii are invited to enter their best works of 2009 in this year’s Ilima Awards program, sponsored by the Hawaii chapter of the International Association of Business Communicators (IABC Hawaii). The Ilima Awards program is open to all communications professionals and students, both members and non-members of IABC, who practice in Hawaii. All entries must have been produced between January 1, 2009 and December 31, 2009. Commercial works, such as publications or videos sold to the public, are ineligible.

Entries are judged by IABC professional in chapters across the nation. Winners receive awards of excellence and merit in an awards banquet in June.

ENTRY DEADLINES
Early Bird (discount applies): RECEIVED by 4:00 pm, Friday, April 2.
Final entry deadline: RECEIVED by 4:00 pm, Friday, April 9.

SIX STEPS TO ENTER

1. Complete the entry form. Make copies of the entry form for additional entries.
2. For each entry, you must prepare and attach a project statement – no more than one letter-sized page – providing the following:

  • Name of entry, entrant, organization; category number/letter and name
  • Objectives, including targeted audience
  • Description of how the project or program enhanced the organization’s mission, vision or business strategies
  • Budget
  • Measurement of results
    3. Submit two copies of each entry with accompanying entry form and project statement attached to EACH COPY.
    4. Package entries to keep all materials together. Submit photos in lieu of bulky or odd-sized materials for easier handling.
    5. Enclose your check payable to: “IABC Hawaii”; or a copy of your online payment receipt. All entries MUST include either a check or copy of online receipt.

    ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

    Publications. (Newsletters, newspapers, magazines, or magapapers). Submit three issues. Issues do not need to be consecutive but all must have been produced within the eligibility period.

    Emerging Technologies, Video, Multi-media and Electronic programs. Submit all entries, regardless of format, on CD-Rom (Mac and PC), or DVD. Include script with all entries. Electronic and interactive work samples should be viewable on Windows or Macintosh equipment and/or software. Summarize your CD-ROM, DVD or other electronic medium (a screen shot with caption, a storyboard of select scenes, etc.) in your project statement.

    NOTE: Electronic entries will be disqualified if judges cannot view or install work samples using instructions provided.

    Important Information about Entry Form
  • Please complete entry form (including category information) and attach it to your entry along with your project statement.
  • Duplicate the blank form as necessary for additional entries. Incomplete or improperly submitted entries may be disqualified.
  • IABC members are not permitted to enter a non-member’s work under the member’s name in order to take advantage of member pricing.
  • There will be no refunds on disqualified entries.
  • If paying for multiple entries with one check, you must itemize the entries by member/non-member status and category number-letter.
  • Include a copy of your online payment receipt, if paying online.

    COST
    The cost to enter is $60 per entry for IABC members and $70 for non-members. The student member rate is $20 and student non-members pay $25 per entry. Entrants submitting by the early bird deadline will receive a $10 discount off each standard entry fee.

    JUDGING
    Fellow communications professionals in IABC chapters on the U.S. mainland will judge entries. Only one Ilima Award (Award of Excellence) will be given in each subcategory, except in the case of a tie.  Awards of Merit may be given at the discretion of the judges. If, in the opinion of the judges, there is no entry worthy of an award, no award will be given. All student entries will be judged in a separate student division.

    AWARDS DINNER
    The awards dinner will be held at the Waialae Country Club, on Thursday, June 10, 2010.

    IABC Awards Program

    HAWAII Awards

    Ilima Awards: The Ilima Awards were established to recognize and award excellence in communication programs and programs. Get the recognition you deserve by submitting your work in this prestigious competition. Entries are judged by IABC professionals in other chapters. Winners receive Awards of Excellence and Merit during an annual dinner banquet in April.

    Communicator of the Year (COTY) Award: This award was established by IABC Hawaii in 1982 to honor individuals who are not professional communicators, yet have demonstrated excellence in the promotion and effective use of communication strategies. Submit your candidate to the IABC Hawaii board of directors for consideration.

    Lifetime Achievement Award: The Lifetime Achievement award is presented to individuals who have demonstrated excellence in their communications practice as well as have contributed to the development of other professionals in the fielde of business communications. Past recipients have included Mr. Arnold Kishi, Director eGovernment, State of Hawaii (2002), Dr. Helen Varner, Communications Dean at Hawaii Pacific University (2004), and Stafford Kiguichi , Senior Vice President and Corporate Communications Manager at Bank of Hawaii (2007).



    REGIONAL Awards

    Silver Quill Awards: In the annual Silver Six Awards Program, communicators compete with colleagues in the Pacific Plains Region: Alaska, Arizona, California, Hawaii, Idaho, Illinois, Iowa, Minnesota, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, North Dakota, Oregon, South Dakota, Utah, Washington, Wisconsin, Wyoming. Hawaii winners receive these awards at a spring IABC program. Past winners from Hawaii have included Ms. Kitty Lagaretta, President & CEO of Communications Pacific and Mr. Arnold Kishi, East-West Center.     Gold Quill Awards: Communicators enter the best of their professional work in this annual international competition.
